Halfway to a Quarter of the Way There

March1

I’m sitting in the library right now, about to go to my last class before Spring Break. It’s hard to believe that the semester is already half way over. Although, I’m pretty sure I have more than half the work left to do. Oh well, .5 semesters down, ? to go.

Here’s a couple of the books I’ve been reading… you know, just for fun:

This book is actually way different from the title. It’s really, basically, Bible interpretation. There are several good chapters about things I learned in college and had since forgotten. I particularly enjoyed the chapter about the history of hermeneutics. Did you know that hermeneutics was at the center of the reformation and that for hundreds of years before that nobody interpreted the Bible literally? Yeah me too, but I had forgotten.

Unlike I expected, this book did not tell me to bow down and worship psychology. Instead, Dr. Crabb says a lot of what I heard throughout college in the student life department, i.e. deal with the issues of the heart rather than external sins. I haven’t read many counseling books, and I’m not sure that I will, but this book was definitely convicting for some self-examination. Shhh, don’t tell anyone at TMC that this book was required for one of my classes here.

I’m Coming Home

February23

Spring break is only a few weeks away, and I get to come home for a visit! I’ll be back in town from March 13th - 19th. Let me know if you want to hang out. So far, my priorities are:
1. Spend time with my two favorite Jo’s, Mary Jo and Amber Jo
2. Go to Thursday Night Dinner at the Brock’s house
3. Meet Jacob Noah Brock
4. Go to a concert with J.A. Lewis
5. Attend my favorite Sunday morning service
6. Checkout the newly formatted MHBS

Dr. Powell?

February7

I got to have lunch with one of my professors yesterday, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. I decided to go off the diet for an hour because he wanted to take me to his favorite Italian place. I forgot how good pizza tastes. Anyway, we talked about a lot of different things, and he was very encouraging about my direction in ministry and my path within the ed department. In the middle of our lunch, he brought up something that I hadn’t really thought about before. He told me that DTS has a partnership with the University of North Texas where you can get an EdD or PhD in conjunction with the seminary MA. He said I should look into it, because a doctorate from a secular school could open up a lot of opportunities in a foreign country. So how bout it internet friends, can you see a Dr. Powell? Just the thought of it kind of freaks me out.
